Description

Albrecht von Hohenlohe, elected bishop of Würzburg, passes statutes on the election of the abbot and of the other prelates of the monastery and establishes their respective areas of responsibility. He determines the minimum size of the convent, sets the amount of the paternal and maternal inheritance due to the people entering the monastery and stipulates, among other things, regulations regarding the education of the monastic students, the administration of monastic issues and the arrangement of the communal life inside the monastery. He orders this decree to be attested by the public notary Konrad von Nördlingen in the unusual form of a rolled up parchment deed (rotulus). St. Stephan subsequently became one of the most important Benedictine monasteries in the bishopric of Würzburg. Dissolved in 1803, only the former monastic church exists today. The buildings of the regional government of Lower Franconia today occupy the former premises of the monastic complex.
