Wappenverleihung für die Reichsstadt Kempten

Staatsarchiv Augsburg

Description

Kempten, which had fought for its independence as a typical “free city” in tough conflicts with the prince abbots who resided next door, had proven its loyalty to the emperor. To thank the city in particular for the military support given by a contingent of troops during the wars against the Burgundians, Emperor Frederick III (1415-1493) granted a new and improved coat of arms, which is rendered in colour in the deed itself. In the modern coat of arms bestowed on the city in 1819, this tradition as an imperial city as well as the history of Kempten under the prince abbots were symbolically combined in equal parts.
