Der Thronverzicht des bayerischen Königs Ludwig I.

Description

Extensive demands of the pre-March era prompted by the bourgeois revolutions in Europe also reached Bavaria in 1848 and forced King Ludwig I (1786-1868, king 1825-1848) to make far-reaching concessions in the so-called "March Decree" (6 March 1848). The focus was on the liberalisation of the Constitution by means of ministerial responsibility, of freedom of press, of a new electoral code for the assembly of the estates, of a reform of the judiciary, through the comprehensive care for civil servants and by improving the situation of Jewish citizens. Due to the incompatibility of these demands with the strict monarchic principles to which Ludwig I adhered, the king announced his abdication on 20 March 1848 in favour of his son, Maximilian II Joseph (1811-1864, king from 1848). Ludwig himself composed and signed the declaration of abdication.
