Schutzbrief der Stadt Regensburg

Bayerisches Hauptstaatsarchiv

Description

On 3 October 1349, mayor Perchtolt der Ergoltspech, the city council and the leading men of Regensburg issued the following letter of protection. It names a total of 254 individuals. They all gave their oath that they had agreed, for the honour and liberty of their city ("Ehre und Freiheit unserer Stadt"), to protect their Jews of Regensburg ("vnser Juden hie ze Regensburg") and keep the peace.

The document was issued at the town hall and authenticated with the city seal.

The background to this letter of protection is the persecution suffered by Jews throughout the empire during the Black Death in the mid-14th century. Although the Jewish communities in most other towns were largely destroyed, the Jews of Regensburg escaped.
