Sogenanntes Skizzenbuch des Joseph Benedikt Graßegger (1776 - 1849), Band 1

Historischer Verein Neuburg an der Donau

Description

As well as being a businessman, Joseph Benedikt Graßegger (1776-1849) was also a collector of historical objects connected to the history of his hometown of Neuburg an der Donau. He undertook numerous excursions and made notes and sketches along the way. It was this interest that brought him into contact with the local pastor Karl August Böhaimb (1816-1886). Both men were actively involved in the town's historical society and shared information about their research. Not long before his transfer to Weilheim in Upper Bavaria in 1857, the pastor had the documents produced in two bundles and handed them over to the historical society as "illustrations of the historically curious points".

The first volume primarily consists of descriptions and drawings of places, buildings, ruins or Roman archaeological monuments and coins from Neuburg and the northern and western surrounding areas. The texts include everything from captions to multi-page illustrations in German or transcripts in Latin. Some of them were published in modified form in the "Neuburger Wochenblatt" newspaper between 1827 and 1833 or in the "Kollektaneenblatt" journal of the historical society from 1835 to 1848.

Alongside the sketch and note sheets, which were probably only partially compiled by Graßegger, there are drawings or prints that were subsequently pasted in. The object, described as a sketchbook, probably also served as a basis for his work in the following years and was expanded by pasting in newspaper clippings about descriptions of places and excursions.
