Grundsteinlegung der Konstitutionssäule von Gaibach

Museum für Franken

Description

In honour of the Bavarian constitution of 1818, Franz Erwein, Count of Schönborn-Wiesentheid (1776-1840) donated a column in Gaibach, Lower Franconia. Leo von Klenze (1784-1864) designed the plans for the monument modelled after the Trajan's Column in Rome. Peter von Hess completed his painting in 1822 or 1823, i.e. at least one year after the laying of the foundation stone for the Constitutional Column. One can see the festive community gathered at the building site. In the centre of the picture is Crown Prince Ludwig, the future Bavarian King Ludwig I (1786-1868, king 1825-1848). On the right, underneath the hoisted Bavarian flag, there is a framed plan of the column.
