In universam Aristotelis logicam Commentarius R. P. Ioan. Georgii

Augustinerbibliothek Münnerstadt

Description

The transcript of a lecture by the Jesuit Johann Georgii on the logic of Aristotle comes from the early days of the University of Würzburg, re-founded in 1582 by Prince Bishop Julius Echter von Mespelbrunn (ruled 1573-1617). Born in Lorraine, he taught philosophy at the University of Würzburg from 1612, was professor of mathematics there from 1614 and shared the chair of mathematics with the Jesuit Athanasius Kircher, also in Würzburg, in 1630/31. He died in Molsheim/Alsace in 1657. The student who listened to the lecture on logic in 1613 and made this copy from his transcript was Andreas Platt from Karlstadt a. M.; the elaborate book cover indicates that he came from a wealthy family. As a budding theologian and priest, he had already received the tonsure and lower orders before his matriculation. Ordained a priest in 1618, Platt, now a master, was parish priest of Wermerichshausen from 1627 and parish priest of Münnerstadt from 1628 until his death in 1643 as well as dean of the chapter of the same name. His work as a town priest falls into the time when the Augustinian hermits had to leave their monastery in Münnerstadt temporarily due to the Peasants' Wars. Platt's epitaph can still be found today outside the parish church's choir. After Platt's death, the manuscript came into the possession of Doctor Johannes Heinckelius, priest of Wermerichshausen, who bequeathed it to the Augustinian Library Münnerstadt during his lifetime.
