Staatliche Münzsammlung München

Description

Obverse: Richly decorated depiction of God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Reverse: Table with extensive inscription.

The renaissance period gave rise to a flourishing of the art of medal making in Europe, which was connected inextricably with the strong revival in the arts, culture and sciences. Starting in the late mediaeval period, this development was going to spread from the northern Italian cities through all of Europe.

The medal of the Holy Trinity created by the medal maker Hans Reinhard the Elder for Duke Moritz von Sachsen (1521-1553) represents a high point in manufacturing technique and complexity. This silver treasure was created in 1544 as a sign of the willingness for reconciliation between the young Protestant confession and the Catholic confession. The foundation is a cast silver medal onto which a Crucifix etc is soldered. This production technique is extremely elaborate and was employed only in exceptional cases. Normally, medals are either minted or cast.
