Universitätsbibliothek Augsburg

Description

The scribe of the manuscript likely was a member of the Salzburg scriptorium school under Bishop Adalram (821-836). Same as the sister manuscript in Paris, the handwritten book of gospels today in Augsburg was created in artistic response to a book of gospels of the Ada group from the court school of Charlemagne (768-814 king of the Frankian Empire, from 800 Roman emperor). Further influences come from Irish traditions; a relationship with the Kremsmünster Codex Millenarius has also been established. The manuscript belongs to the acquisitions of Prince Kraft Ernst von Oettingen-Wallerstein (1748-1802). The narrow, high format makes it probable that the cover was originally decorated with an ivory panel. At the time of its purchase in ca. 1779 the original cover had, however, already been lost. When the manuscript was rebound, cuts of the body of the book led to a loss of text. // Datum: 2017
