Bibel - Universitätsbibliothek Augsburg, Cod.I.2.8.5

Universitätsbibliothek Augsburg

Description

The complete bible, written in the second quarter following the example of the Paris pocket bibles, was furnished in the context of the Parisian studio Gautier Lebaube, active between 1235 and 1250. 80 multi-line ornamented capitals in opaque paint mark the beginning of each biblical book, as well as the division of the psalters; some of them extend over the height of an entire column. In addition to foliate initials with vegetal elements, there are also historiated capitals at the beginning of Genesis (Christ with the Globe) and at the beginning of the Gospels (half-length figures with the symbols of the evangelist). The requirement of placing a complete Bible in a small volume is met by the precious, particularly fine parchment and by the delicate pearl script. The manuscript was already in Southern Germany during the second half of the thirteenth century, as can be seen from the additions made by Southern-German hands. It is unknown how it arrived at the Oettingen-Wallerstein collection. // Datum: 2017
