Description

The 1.350 aquarelles of plants had been commissioned for the most part by the Nuremberg city physician and natural explorer Christoph Jacob Trew (1695-1769) between the years of 1733 and 1768 from several Nuremberg artists. Since the depictions had been conceived as botanical illustrations, the greatest emphasis was put on a naturalistic rendition, which does not diminish their artistic and aesthetic value in the least. The watercolours of plants arrived in Erlangen in 1818, when the university received nearly the entire holdings of the Universität Altdorf (Altdorf University), which was dissolved in 1809. They had been part of the library and collections of Christoph Jacob Trews, which he had bequeathed in 1769 to Altdorf University. // Datum: 2017
