Description

The war book of Knight Ludwig von Eyb zum Hartenstein (1450-1521), created in ca. 1500 in Franconia, is with its over 300 sheets the most comprehensive work of its kind. Ludwig von Eyb composed the work for his overlord, Palgrave Philipp bei Rhein (r. 1476-1508), from diverse sources. As basis served in particular the oldest German manuscript on military science, the "Bellifortis" by Konrad Kyeser (d. after 1405) of the year 1405. Probably Eyb also used his own experiences. The work is extraordinarily lavishly decorated; the illustrations largely prevail. Almost every sheet contains a full-page drawing coloured with watercolours, starting with depictions of historical costumes over diverse fighting techniques to reproductions of artillery. In part, the images are accompanied by eexplanations. // Datum: 2017
