Hortus Eystettensis, Band 2

Universitätsbibliothek Eichstätt-Ingolstadt

Description

The magnificient Hortus Eystettensis depicts the plants from the gardens at the Willibaldsburg in Eichstätt on 367 full-page plates. Around the year 1606, Prince Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen commissioned Basilius Besler, an apothecary and botanist from Nuremberg, to immortalize the plants of his garden in an elaborate printed work. The book shows 1,084 species of plant from all parts of the known world of the time. The 366 plates (including one double plate) correspond to the number of days in a leap year. The book was designed as an elaborate object of prestige. The digitalized copy is a reproduction of a special edition in which the plates are printed only on one side that is sometimes called the Fürstenausgabe - the prince's edition. Among the approximately 25 hand-colored copies dating from 1613 that still exist today, this three-volume copy belonging to the Eichstätt seminary library is considered the best preserved. Datum: 2017
