The Staatsbibliothek Bamberg

The Staatsbibliothek Bamberg (State Library Bamberg) is a regional library for Upper Franconia and one of the largest memory institutions in Bavaria. Founded during Secularisation in 1803, it brings together the book collections of the dissolved collegiate churches and monasteries of the Bamberg prince-bishopric and of the older Bamberg University. The library preserves over half a million volumes and is constantly expanded to include current literature on area studies and in the humanities. It is available to the public free of charge for study, research, work and education. The admission of three books to the UNESCO document heritage "Memory of the World" underlines the international importance of the approximately 1,000 mediaeval manuscripts. 165 of these volumes date back to the diocese founded by Emperor Heinrich II (died 1024). The manuscripts, the 3,500 incunabula of the fifteenth century and the extensive graphics collection are gradually scientifically catalogued and digitised. Many of them may already be accessed worldwide on www.bamberger-schaetze.de.
