Riedl, Adrian von: Strom-Atlas von Bayern

Adrian von Riedl (1746-1809) had been electoral land surveyor since 1766. His task was the survey of the Bavarian road network. In 1801, Riedl played an outstanding role as co-founder of the Topographisches Bureau (Topographic Bureau) and as main Bavarian surveyor. From 1808 until his death in 1809, he was director of the Topographisches Bureau.

The enthusiastic cartographer also carried out privately financed surveys for a new mapping of Bavaria. He first developed a concept for systematic surveying in Bavaria. In 1785, he began with his surveying work. However, realisation proved to be lengthy and difficult.

From 1796 onwards, as a replacement for his failed overall map, he published drawings of individual surveys of roads and water bodies in the famous Reise-Atlas von Baiern (Travel Atlas of Bavaria), which was followed by the Strom-Atlas von Baiern (River-Atlas of Bavaria). Both were published and financed by him on his own initiative.

"Forty years of service in hydraulic engineering, his own research in this field and observations made during this time" made it possible for Adrian von Riedl to compose this work - as he writes in the preface to his Strom-Atlas.

The Strom-Atlas consists of a 200-page text and 27 large-format sheets with maps and illustrations. Among others, the Loisach, the Isar, the Inn, the Amper, the Danube, the Würmsee, Walchensee, Kochelsee, Schliersee, Tegernsee, Chiemsee, Ammersee and Wörthsee, as well as bridges and monuments on the Bavarian rivers are depicted.

The four-sheet Hydrographische Karte von Bayern (Hydrographic Map of Bavaria) on a scale of 1:230,800, available separately from 1807, was already included in three parts in the Strom-Atlas. It is the first precise representation of Bavarian water bodies. The Strom-Atlas remained unfinished because of Riedl's sudden death in 1809.
