Epistolae ad diversos. Bd. 2 - BSB Clm 10356(2

Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Description

The letter collection consists of 522 letters from reformers, mainly Melanchthon's. Leaf 277 in volume 1 (Clm 10356) is particularly noteworthy. The philosopher, humanist and theologian Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560), along with Martin Luther the driving force behind the German and European church reformation, tells him in moving words about the difficult situation of his fellow believers at the Reichstag in Augsburg in 1530: "Every day sophists and monks flock here to stir up the emperor's hatred of us [...] We are fighting here alone and leave with infinite dangers." In the letter Luther is implored to answer, advise and assist. The emperor was presented with the Confessio, the Lutheran defensive pamphlet, which Melanchthon had sent Luther to read. In addition, Luther is asked to take a stand on controversial points (the Lord's Supper, marriage, private mass) before the opponents do so. Datum: 2016
