Großfürstentum Finnland, Suomen Pankki: Banknote über 3 Markka von 1861

Giesecke+Devrient Stiftung Geldscheinsammlung

Description

The Grand Duchy of Finland existed from 1809 to 1917 and was a largely autonomous part of the Russian Empire. In 1811, the Suomen Pankki (Bank of Finland) was established by Tsar Alexander I. From 1840 onwards, it was allowed to issue banknotes. In addition to its notes, banknotes from Russian and Swedish banks as well as Finnish banks were still in circulation. It was designated the sole central bank by law in 1886 and continues to exercise this function today.

The banknote reflects Finland’s political history. It is trilingual in Finnish, Russian and Swedish. The design consists of richly embellished ornaments. A dry stamp with the coat of arms of Finland can be seen in the top centre.
