Pfanne (Gefäß)

Töpfermuseum Thurnau

Description

Thurnau earthenware is ideal for cooking, baking and roasting. The nature of the clay and the manufacturing process allow the vessels to be heated without any risk. The potteries' most important product was the pot that gave them their name, also known as "Hafen". Special vessel shapes were devised for some dishes, including the "Hosnpfanna" for preparing roast hare. The hare is placed in such a way that the drumsticks are in the pan's two bulges at the back.

The Thurnau cooking and roasting utensils remained undecorated because they were exposed to the open fire. The glaze forms a very hard glassy, waterproof coating. The honey-yellow, silky, glossy colouring, which is typical for Thurnau, is due to the use of lead ore and red iron stone.

The roast hare pan with the inventory number 885 was made in Thurnau around 1910 and comes from the Freund pottery, which existed in Thurnau from 1784 to 1932. Roast hare pans are still made today by the Renner pottery.
