Johannes Eck, c.1600 (Kunstsammlungen der Veste Coburg, XIII, 110, 9)

Johannes Eck (1486–1543) is portrayed here on a copperplate print from c.1600. The artist is unknown.

Eck wears an almutia as a collar and a camauro on his head, as otherwise worn by the pope and by other dignitaries. In 1520, Pope Leo X (1475–1521, pope 1513–1521) had entrusted Johannes Eck with the publication of the papal bull of excommunication against Martin Luther (1483–1546), to which Eck had contributed, in Germany. In return, the pope had bestowed on Eck the high-ranking title of a protonotary apostolic.
