Maps of the Palatinate

The oldest maps presented here show the area between Landau, Speyer and Philippsburg. They date from the beginning of the eighteenth century and are preserved in the "Atlas Curieux" by Gabriel Bodenehr. A map by astronomer Christian Mayer (Mapp. XI,831-1/2) is particularly magnificent. It was probably published around 1780 in Mannheim and is dedicated to the Elector Karl Theodor, whose portrait can be seen in the dedicatory cartouche. Maps of Speyer and of the Duchy of Zweibrücken can be found in Reilly's "Schauplatz der Fünf Theile der Welt" (c.1800). A map of the Rhine district (Hbks/F 19 b#Kt.9) in the Kingdom of Bavaria is in the atlas of J.B. Roost (1834). The atlases of G. Dubois and G. Ritter, which depict the judicial districts and administrative structure of the area in the middle of the nineteenth century, deserve special mention.

The area of the Palatinate is also included in the pages of the Topographischer Atlas von Bayern (Topographic Atlas of Bavaria) and in the Karte des deutschen Reiches (Map of the German Empire).
