Roost, Johann Baptist: Atlas des Königreichs Bayern, 1834

The geographer, engineer and cartographer Johann Baptist Roost drew the Atlas des Königreichs Bayern in IX Blättern (Atlas of the Kingdom of Bavaria in IX Sheets), which appeared in 1834. The atlas contains an overview of the Bavarian rivers and mountains as well as detailed maps of the Isar district, Upper Danube district, Lower Danube district, Rain district, Rezat district, Upper Main district, Lower Main district and the Rhine district on a scale of 1:950,000.

It also includes information about the areas, such as stone deposits, navigability of rivers, monasteries and castles, caves and mines as well as the locations of famous battles.

In 1854, the Atlas des Königreichs Bayern was reprinted in nine sheets (Hbks/F 19 bb) after Ludwig I (1786-1868) had decided to reclassify the districts of the kingdom on 29 November 1837.

Since then, the eight districts of Bavaria have been called: Upper Bavaria, Lower Bavaria, Palatinate, Upper Palatinate and Regensburg, Upper Franconia, Middle Franconia, Lower Franconia and Aschaffenburg, Swabia and Neuburg.

In 1865, a further edition appeared (2 Bavar. 747 o), based on the changed division of the judiciary. On these maps all district, city and regional courts as well as the respective juridical boundaries are marked.
