Letter from Helene Raff to Paul Heyse

This letter by Helene Raff (1865-1942) to the poet and winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature Paul Heyse (1830-1914, Heyse Archive V.105) describes his house in winter and its significance for Raff in poetic terms. In this house, which was the centre of intellectual life, she had found her home ("in this house I discovered my heart"). The letter also reflects Raff's personal relationship with Heyse. She was especially supported by him and Wilhelm Hertz (1835-1902, Hertziana 129 Klingenfeld, Emma) in her literary development. She published a biography of Paul Heyse in 1910 and had previously dedicated a portrait to him at Munich's Glaspalast.
