Herrenchiemsee New Palace: Private bedroom

The private bedroom is decorated in white and panelled with richly ornamented gilded frames. The ceiling is decorated with gilded stucco work and mythological groups of figures, the arrangement of which is based on the ceiling design in Amalienburg in Nymphenburg Palace Park.

The bed niche is closed by a carved and gilded balustrade. The bed canopy, curtains and coverings in gold-interwoven silk crêpe and velvet with gold embroidery are blue, the king’s favourite colour, and on a richly carved and gilded stand there is a blue glass ball to be illuminated from the inside as night lighting.

The paintings above the doors depict views of Versailles Palace and courtly festivities under Louis XV (1710-1774). On the two fireplaces, a marble bust of Marie Antoinette (1755-1793) and a clock with a portrait of Louis XVI (1754-1793).

A marble bust of Louis XV, who this room is dedicated to, stands on the console table with its magnificent lapis lazuli top, Ludwig II’s favourite stone. The table design, based on 18th century French models, was created by Julius Hofmann (1840-1896), 1882, a virtuoso designer, court architect since 1883; the artistic quality of the approval designs alone is always outstanding because Ludwig II demanded this. The sculptor Philipp Perron (1840-1907) executed the work in 1884.
