As an architect and trained carpenter, Franz Zell was very familiar with craftsmanship on the one hand and the art of drawing and draughtsmanship on the other.

Before his career as an architect, he ran his own "Zeichen-Bureau für Bau- und Möbelschreinerei / -tischlerei" (Drwaing office for building and furniture joinery) in Munich. He advertised his arts and crafts drawing and his sketches for furniture designs in the "Deutscher Schreinerkalender". From 1894 to 1898 Zell published this small pocket diary with subject-related notes and advice.

The two advertisements show Zell to be competent in many areas. He recommends himself "for every style" and offers sketches and detailed drawings: for "pharmacies and school interiors, hairdressing salons, cafés and restaurants, as well as drawings for all interior decoration". As a "particular speciality", Zell offers his skills in designing "whole room furnishings in modern English style" and "especially Rococo". His offer is accompanied by the reference to "quick service" and "cheapest prices".
