„Der Baumeister“

"Der Baumeister" (The master builder) is a trade journal for architects published since 1902. The monthly journal for architecture and building practice not only deals with architecture but also with urban development and landscape planning. The long-time publisher was the architect Hermann Jansen (1869-1945).

In the first few decades, the magazine was published in DIN A3 format. It was divided into an editorial section, an advertisement section and an appendix with plates.

In the September 1916 issue, Franz Zell published on the subject of "Old and new inns in the Bavarian mountains" in "Der Baumeister".

Zell writes here in detail about the history of the "inns in the Bavarian mountains and closely related Tyrol". He presents the stately buildings with photographs he has taken. He presents these as successful examples of domestic construction.

Zell describes how this type of construction can be continued and further developed in the modern sense, mainly on the basis of his own designs. He presents the "Fischerbräu" inn in Bad Reichenhall, the "Gasthof zum Unterwirt" in Arnstorf in Lower Bavaria, "Gasthof Terofal" in Neuhaus near Schliersee and the "Zur Römerschanze" inn in Grünwald with floor plans, photos and detailed descriptions. In the plate section, Zell shows his design for "Gasthaus Eibsee" and historical inns.

As in all his articles on domestic construction, Zell warns of its loss and calls for action to counteract this.
