The Diözesanbibliothek des Erzbistums München und Freising

The Diözesanbibliothek des Erzbistums München und Freising (Archdiocese of Munich and Freising Diocesan Library) is part of the academic institution of the Archiv und Bibliothek des Erzbistums München und Freising (Archdiocese of Munich and Freising Archive and Library). It has grown out of the collections in the Dombibliothek Freising (Cathedral Library Freising) and the Bibliothek des Metropolitankapitels München (Library of the Munich Metropolitan Chapter). It is currently in a phase of fundamental reorganisation.

The diocesan library’s remit is to preserve and manage the archdiocesan library material. The library collects historical and current literature on all theological disciplines as well as on history and culture with a special focus on the diocesan area and church matters. It also documents church life in the archdiocese by collecting so-called grey literature. It is the collection point for the holdings of dissolved church libraries and for church music. It supplies the diocesan administration with literature (via the Central Service Library in the main building of the Archbishop’s Ordinariate) and is open to the public. It is an information centre on church, especially diocesan, issues.
