The Referat für Arbeit und Wirtschaft der Landeshauptstadt München

The responsibilities of Referat für Arbeit und Wirtschaft der Landeshauptstadt München (The City of Munich Department of Labour and Economic Development) (RAW), founded in 1991, are wide-ranging. They include the following topics: European and international affairs; business development; municipal employment policy; tourism; participation management as well as organising festivals and markets. The department provides information about Munich as a business location and advises interested parties specifically on location issues. Promoting the traditional economic sector of tourism is just as much a part of the department’s remit as supporting innovative economic sectors such as high-tech or information and communication technology.

The range of tasks here covers dealing with fundamental economic and employment policy issues to business development tasks and managing municipal holdings in companies. The department contributes to reducing and preventing unemployment with municipal employment policy and qualification programmes. The activities are not limited to the Munich area, but also include cultivating contacts and memberships in Europe and worldwide.

The RAW Events Department is responsible for managing the city’s traditional festivals and markets, such as the Auer Dults, Christmas markets and Oktoberfest with the Oidn Wiesn. In addition, the Events Department manages the Theresienwiese, where various events are held throughout the year.

The "München Tourismus" municipal tourism organisation, based at the RAW, follows the tradition of the Munich Tourist Office, which was founded in 1960. Together with its partners from the private sector, Tourismusinitiative München TIM (Munich Tourism Initiative), München Tourismus develops marketing and PR measures as well as tourism products in order to position the destination of Munich in international competition as the most lovable city in the world with a special emphasis on sustainability.
