Meisterlieder - BSB Cgm 5103

Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Description

The more than 160 Meisterlieder from the years 1530 to 1593 in this volume deal not only with biblical themes but also with secular themes. Literary and historical material from antiquity and the Middle Ages is handled. The previous owner of the manuscript is unknown. In addition to texts by Linhart Ferber, Sebastian Wild and Benedikt von Watt, it contains 13 poems by Hans Sachs (1494-1576). The Nuremberg master shoemaker is the best-known representative of 16th century bourgeois imperial literature. His work includes 198 dramas and carnival plays, over 4,000 Meister songs, farces, fables and poems. The Meisterlied became a mouthpiece of the Reformation through Sachs' work. The Meistersang, which is organised in Meistersinger societies in accordance with their statutes and codified in regulations, represents an attempt "to provide non-academic urban middle-class members with access to knowledge and education" (Thomas Cramer).
