Note
- The Neuburg castle chapel is considered the oldest church room built for the Protestant rite. Behind the portal in the doorway, dated 1538, a high, trapezoidal room opens up, to which the rectangular, raised altar niche is connected. The surrounding princely gallery above bright red marble consoles has a magnificent balustrade with rich relief decoration of grotesques characteristic of Renaissance art. The red marble altar with the sculpted crucifixion group was created between 1540 and 1542 by Martin Hering. Probably during this period a pulpit was also installed at the transition from the altar to the church, the remains of which were discovered during the restoration in 2015. It can be seen as an imprint in the plaster today. The pulpit, and thus "the word of God", was given a prominent place in the spotlight as a result. The most important work of art in the palace chapel is the magnificent cycle of frescoes on the gallery walls and on the ceiling vault, created by the Salzburg artist Hans Bocksberger the Elder (died 1561) in 1543. The fresco cycle is the earliest example of Protestant monumental painting.
