Wandbehang Nr. 247

Die Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum

Description

Gunta Stölzl (1897-1983) came to the Bauhaus as a student in 1919. During her years as a student, she already had a significant influence on the development of the weaving workshop, and she took over the entire organisational and content-related work as early as 1925. After the Bauhaus moved to Dessau in 1927, she succeeded Georg Muche (1895-1987) as head of the weaving workshop. As the only woman among the Bauhaus masters, she left the Bauhaus in 1931 after just under 13 years. An entire issue of the Bauhaus magazine was dedicated to her when she left. It says: "it is thanks to her that people talk about Bauhaus materials".

This wall hanging no. 247 is characterised by a free arrangement of geometric shapes: vertical and horizontal stripes and rectangles overlap and are partly offset against each other. In the areas where the different colour surfaces overlap, colour mixtures are created. Blue and pink, for example, become violet, intense orange is partially toned down by grey beige. The strong indentations at the edges are due to the use of the different materials silk, wool, viscose and bouclé yarn.

The wall hangings no. 247 and no. 324, like the cushion cover no. 555 and the decorative fabric no. 539, were added to Die Neue Sammlung’s holdings in December 1926 (inv. no. 525/26-527/26).
