Wandbehang Nr. 175

Die Neue Sammlung - The Design Museum

Description

Like No. 81 (inv. no. 363/26), Wall Hanging No. 175 was created just after the Bauhaus moved from Weimar to Dessau. Horizontal stripes in different widths are interrupted by isolated square and vertical areas in contrasting colours. The free arrangement finely balances playing with the regular pattern and deviating from it. Anni Albers’ (1899-1994) textiles have a complex relationship with abstract painting. The three-dimensional textile structures of the weaving technique lend the wall hanging the additional sensual appeal of touch and a special material presence. Albers herself later described her wall hangings as pictorial.
