Erinnerung an „Kleintettau“ (Obfr.) Kirchweih 1920

Forschungsstelle für fränkische Volksmusik

Description

The motif of the postcard shows a group of young people and children between two half-timbered houses. A boy with a bicycle can be seen on the left. The Kirchweih (parish fair) couples of the Upper Franconian parish village of Kleintettau have gathered with the musicians for a group photo, a few children have sneaked into shot. It was often the case that couples who publicly appeared as a pair on the occasion of the Kirchweih were considered to be engaged. The festive attire is particularly expressive. Modern summer Sunday dresses for the ladies, suits for the musicians and gentlemen. The men don hats with flower pins that identify them as Kirchweihburschen (parish fair chaps). The two fellows in front are also wearing white embroidered aprons. During certain customs (mostly dancing around either the erected tree in some fashion or around a tethered ram), they are responsible for pouring beer from the watering can decorated with flowers and ribbons and inscribed with the year "1920". Musicians with instruments (strings, winds, drum) sit in front. The photographer comes from Lauscha in Thuringia, the souvenir photo was designed as a postcard, but was sent months after the Kirchweih.
