The underworld painter has lived up to his name here: in the centre sit Hades and Persephone in their palace, surrounded by numerous heroes such as Heracles, who is taming Cerberus, and Orpheus, who is playing his kithara. The three judges of the underworld, Minos, Rhadamantys and Aiakos, sit on the other side. In the bottom left corner, Tantalus is desperately trying to drink water that is receding before him – his divine punishment for offences in this world. This vase once adorned a grave in southern Italy.
