Alfred I Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha: Letter to his parents, written on a piece of birch bark

This letter written in English and in his own hand by the 17-year-old Prince Alfred from the Coburg Autograph Collection, dates back to the initiative of his father Prince Albert. In this moving testimonial Alfred greets his parents on 30 June 1861 from his sea journey to Canada, where he visited the landscape park Cataraqui in Quebec. As Alfred reports, he wrote the letter in Native American style on a piece of birch bark, which he had removed from a tree during the afternoon.
